Miguel Martinez: Reimagining the Figure - A Conduit for Queer Phenomena

Erin Batson October 16, 2023

Martinez's artistic practice is a captivating journey into a syncretist vision, where his imagery seamlessly migrates between drawn observations of his environment and tantric abstractions of the transcendent. This juxtaposition of the earthly and the ethereal creates a profound and thought-provoking exploration of identity, self, and human existence.

Miguel Martinez, born in 1991 in Celaya, Mexico, holds an MFA in Studio Art from Hunter College, earned in 2021, and a BFA in Painting from the University of Houston, received in 2013. His academic background provides a solid foundation for his innovative artistic endeavors.

Martinez's work has garnered attention and recognition in the art world through his participation in numerous exhibitions. Notable venues where his work has been featured include the Westbeth Gallery, 205 Hudson, and the Lawndale Art Center. His ability to convey complex themes and emotions through his art has captivated audiences and critics alike.

Miguel Martinez was is also a recipient of the prestigious Dallas Museum of Art Clare Hart DeGolyer Grant, a testament to his exceptional talent and artistic contributions. Additionally, Martinez has had the privilege of serving as an artist in residence at Mostajo Projects, where he continued to expand the boundaries of his creativity and vision.

Currently residing and working in Brooklyn, Miguel Martinez remains a dynamic force in the contemporary art scene. His work continues to evolve, pushing boundaries, challenging norms, and contributing to a more inclusive, thought-provoking, and engaging art world.

A selection of Miguel Martinez’s works are included in “Love’s Other Name” a show of drawings and works on paper at The Spite Haus in Philadelphia.  The show is curated by Opal Mae Ong.
